A few months ago, my apartment flooded and I had to move out for a few days. One of these days I should add the video my roommate and I took. We laughed our heads off as it rose up to our ankles in some areas because, quite frankly, there was nothing we could do: there was no power in the house, and the rain just wouldn't stop. We moved everything we could into the bathtub and on top of counters, and then just made the best of the situation. I had no idea what an impact a flood has on someone, though. It took me FOREVER to get everything put away again, and then there was all the work of drying out books (some of which are irreplaceable and were destroyed) and trying to figure out whether furniture was damaged and whether or not I could replace it. LUCKY for me, I had just purchased renters insurance a week before (although there wasn't enough damage to make up for the $500 I'd have to put down for a claim and I didn't end up using it). UNLUCKY for my condo owner, he told me just hours before this all happened that he'd been thinking about getting renters insurance on the place and just hadn't gotten around to it. Ironically, some of the other condos around me had had pipes burst in the two weeks previous, and so I had called to warn him about the potential for water damage. Three hours later the house flooded, leaving him without insurance to pay for all new carpeting and put his renters up in a hotel for the night. Lucky for him, we're nice and didn't make him pay for all the days we couldn't be in the house. However, out of the KINDNESS of his heart, he offered to paint an accent wall for us. I imagined a beautiful taupe colored wall of sorts. Imagine the SURPRISE I felt when I walked in and saw the following color selection:
(notice the color of the carpet next to the wall)

my bedroom (the same shade, although you can't see it in this picture):

After several months, and with the furniture I grew up with arriving from Indiana in a few short weeks, I finally couldn't take it any longer. I gave in and painted, and although the paint color may be a bit TOO neutral now to be an accent wall, it's a huge improvement. The rooms look SO much bigger and the entire house looks brighter and more open. I can't wait to get the new furniture in and decorations on the wall! When it's all done, I'll post pictures. I promise! (Just don't ask me to get everything done in the next few weeks!)
